Haiti's tourism sector faces severe consequences after dozens died in a stampede at the Citadelle Laferrière, one of the country's most important historical sites. Authorities confirmed at least 30 fatalities when chaos erupted as rain fell, with people pushing and trampling each other at the fortress entrance.

Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé expressed "deep sorrow" as investigations began into the tragedy. The site, considered one of Haiti's most stable tourist destinations despite security concerns elsewhere, has been completely suspended. Thirteen bodies remained at the fortress while 17 victims were transported to nearby hospitals.

The massive 19th-century fortress, a national symbol appearing on Haitian currency, represents sovereignty against French colonialism. Built by King Henri Christophe, this disaster threatens Haiti's fragile tourism industry, which had been hoping to rebuild after years of political instability. Investigators will examine crowd control failures at the anniversary event.
