Gulf States Detain Hundreds Over Iran Attack Videos

Since Iran’s missile and drone barrage began in late February, authorities in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar have detained hundreds of residents for posting online footage of the attacks. Emirati officials say at least 35 people face charges ranging from “glorifying” strikes to sharing unverified videos, while Qatar’s interior ministry reports more than 300 arrests for circulating unauthorized clips or rumors.

The crackdown serves two strategic aims. Analysts cite security concerns that open‑source videos could help Iranian analysts locate air‑defence sites, while governments also seek to preserve the Gulf’s reputation as safe havens for investors and tourists. Dubai’s recent promotional video touts beachside tranquility even as the city logged over 2,000 missile and drone impacts in weeks.

Authorities have also blocked dozens of X accounts, including a cryptocurrency influencer and U.S. commentator, warning that a single image can spark panic. The Emirati attorney general stressed that misinformation “can cost lives,” while Qatar released many detainees after they signed pledges not to repost. The sweeps underscore how tighter media controls now intersect with the region’s fragile tourism and investment outlook.
