COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Darline Graham and U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman have advanced to a runoff in South Carolina’s special Republican primary to replace the late Lindsey Graham in the U.S. Senate, one month after his sudden death. Graham, appointed interim by Gov. Henry McMaster and backed by President Donald Trump, was the top vote-getter in a 10-way field. Norman, a House Freedom Caucus member, finished second. The runoff is set for Aug. 25.

“I will spend the next two weeks of this runoff meeting with voters and unlike some politicians listening to their concerns,” Graham said. Norman told supporters: “Let’s win this thing in a big way.” The winner will face Democrat Annie Andrews in the general election. No Democrat has won a U.S. Senate seat in South Carolina in decades.

The unexpected primary began even before funeral observances concluded. State law forced candidates to balance mourning and campaigning. Goodwill toward Lindsey Graham helped boost his sister at the polls, with mailers touting her as “President Trump’s choice.” Norman vaulted to the runoff over another sitting lawmaker, Rep. Russell Fry.
