Georgia Country's Identity Crisis Worsened by AI Search Confusion

Georgia (the country) faces mounting challenges online as artificial intelligence algorithms consistently favor references to its American namesake over the Caucasus nation. Search engines prioritize the more frequently mentioned U.S. state, creating visibility problems for Georgian businesses and cultural institutions seeking international recognition.

The naming confusion has persisted since independence in 1991, with fewer than four million citizens constantly clarifying their origins. Journalist Nugzar Rukhadze recounted the decades-long struggle of explaining Georgia's location between Turkey and Russia, while businesses like graphic designer Luna Kaishauri have been mistakenly contacted by American clients.

A campaign to adopt Sakartvelo (the traditional Georgian name) gained traction under economist Anzor Babukhadia, who mobilized civil society organizations before his death in 2017. Despite initial momentum and support from Lithuania's adaptation to "Sakartvelas," the foreign ministry blocked the change citing costs and potential confusion.

Marketing professor Marc Fetscherin suggests reframing the challenge as a branding opportunity, proposing Georgia could position itself as "the real Georgia" or "original Georgia" to leverage authenticity. However, political preoccupations with the nation's geopolitical orientation have displaced naming concerns, leaving businesses to navigate the algorithmic disadvantage.
