A pyrocumulonimbus — a thundercloud created by intense heat — has formed over France's wildfires, marking a phenomenon "unprecedented in France," officials said. These fire-generated clouds develop when extreme heat from large blazes forces smoke and ash high into the atmosphere, creating thunderstorm-like conditions.

The pyrocumulonimbus can produce lightning strikes that ignite new fires, while also generating powerful downdrafts that spread existing flames unpredictably. Meteorologists note these clouds can reach altitudes of 10-15 kilometers, injecting smoke into the stratosphere where it can linger for months.

French authorities emphasized the rarity of this event in their country, though similar fire clouds have been documented in Australia, Canada, and the western United States during severe fire seasons. The development signals exceptionally intense fire behavior and complicates suppression efforts significantly.
