Flea's Jazz Album 'Honora': Trumpet Journey with Nick Cave, Thom Yorke

Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist, has released his solo debut album 'Honora' after two years of intensive trumpet practice. The 63-year-old musician balanced stadium tours with daily trumpet studies, culminating in a record featuring Nick Cave, Thom Yorke, and contemporary jazz luminaries like Jeff Parker and Anna Butterss.

'Honora' represents a significant departure from Flea's funk-rock roots, blending instrumental jazz with vocal cameos from high-profile collaborators. The album's eclectic mix includes originals and covers, named after his great-great-grandmother and featuring artwork of his Iranian mother-in-law. Flea studied with Rickey Washington, father of Kamasi Washington, to develop his jazz skills.

While some might categorize 'Honora' as a jazz album, producer Josh Johnson sees it more holistically as "different doorways to him." The record showcases Flea's trumpet alongside his signature bass work, with the band planning live performances in the US and Europe this May. For Flea, the project represents a lifelong pursuit of musical beauty that began with his stepfather's jazz jam sessions decades ago.
