Dumbo, the Brooklyn neighborhood famous for its cobblestone streets and Manhattan Bridge views, has transformed into New York City's newest design hub. More than 160 architecture and design firms now operate in the area, according to the Dumbo Business Improvement District. The neighborhood was officially designated as a "design district" last year by NYCxDesign, joining ranks with more established areas like SoHo and Flatiron.

Office rents in Dumbo remain significantly cheaper than Manhattan alternatives. The average asking rent in Dumbo is $53 per square foot, compared with $89 per square foot in SoHo and $60 in the financial district. The median home sales price in Dumbo reached $2.2 million in the first quarter, making it one of the city's most expensive residential areas despite its industrial roots.

Snohetta, the architecture firm behind Times Square's pedestrian redesign, relocated to Dumbo in December from Manhattan's financial district. Partner Craig Dykers said the neighborhood gives architects "the sense that you belong with like-minded people." Three loft buildings now house 79 design, architecture and real estate firms, up from 55 in 2020, demonstrating the rapid concentration of creative talent in the area.
