Energy Secretary Chris Wright said on Wednesday that the Trump administration does not want to ban U.S. exports of diesel, an idea floated to help curb spiraling costs. Speaking at The New York Times’s Climate Forward event, Mr. Wright said President Trump was reviewing a possible pause on exports as diesel prices hit record highs after the U.S. war in Iran. “Nobody wants a full blanket ban,” he said.

Mr. Wright defended keeping five aging coal plants open, arguing it was necessary to prevent people from freezing to death. He also defended Mr. Trump’s support for data centers, even as voters express concerns about environmental trade-offs. “We are not imposing data centers on anyone,” he said.

Gov. Abigail Spanberger of Virginia said states should do more to regulate data centers and police their effects on air and noise pollution. Justin Pearson, a Democratic state lawmaker in Tennessee, accused Elon Musk’s xAI of using natural gas-burning turbines to power its supercomputer in Memphis without proper permits.

The event underscored how the administration has shifted focus from fighting climate change to producing more fossil fuels.
