Darvaza Crater Fires Dwindle, Raising Climate and Investment Questions

Satellite data shows the Darvaza crater in Turkmenistan, long dubbed the "Gates to Hell," has lost more than 75 percent of its flame intensity over the past three years.

The decline follows two new wells drilled nearby in 2024, yet monitoring firms suggest the dimming began earlier, hinting at natural shifts rather than targeted suppression.

Carbon Mapper reports the site released about 1,960 kilograms of methane per hour last October, up from a 2022‑25 average of 1,300 kilograms. Even with smaller flames, the crater still emits significant methane, a potent greenhouse gas, underscoring Turkmenistan’s broader emissions challenge.

For investors, the case illustrates how geologic anomalies can impact national energy profiles and environmental reputations, affecting commodity valuations and regulatory scrutiny.
