Some US states face a large cyclosporiasis outbreak caused by the Cyclospora parasite. Nearly 7,000 domestic cases have been identified this season, with 1,645 confirmed and about 5,100 under analysis. Health officials say the outbreak is likely the largest on record.

The CDC has linked 1,644 cases to a multistate outbreak centered in the Midwest. Five states are implicated: Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Michigan alone reports 6,571 cases, with Ohio at 1,244, Indiana 511, West Virginia 195, and Kentucky 192. At least 94 hospitalizations have been recorded nationally, with no deaths.

Shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico served at Taco Bell is the likely source. Taylor Farms has recalled iceberg lettuce shipped to 27 states, including products sent to Walmart and Jack in the Box. Taco Bell has removed the lettuce from its supply chain. The investigation continues, but no other foods have been identified.

Symptoms include watery diarrhea, cramping, and fatigue, appearing days to two weeks after exposure. Cases typically rise May through August, but this year's counts far exceed previous seasons. Federal officials are tracking multiple subclusters, and bioMérieux data shows Cyclospora prevalence surging to over 18% of GI tests recently.
