Columbia Report Exposes Decades of Sexual Assault Cover-Up

An external investigation commissioned by Columbia University and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital revealed that a culture of silence allowed Robert Hadden to sexually assault hundreds of patients over decades. The report found that Hadden cultivated a positive image as a top obstetrician-gynecologist, using his reputation to facilitate abuse while reports of misconduct were suppressed by institutional hierarchy.

Despite multiple reports reaching physician leaders over the years, the investigation concluded that both institutions failed to respond effectively to allegations. Hadden, who hasn't practiced medicine since 2012, pleaded guilty to abuse in 2016 in state court, avoiding jail time before receiving a 20-year federal prison sentence. The case infuriated victims who felt the institutions protected him.

In response, Columbia's acting president Claire Shipman announced leadership changes including the resignation of Dr. Mary D'Alton, who had a close working relationship with Hadden, from her positions as chair of obstetrics and gynecology. Former dean Dr. Lee Goldman will retire. Shipman stated the university is committed to ensuring such abuse cannot happen again, acknowledging institutional failures that allowed Hadden to exploit the system and avoid detection for years.
