A Colorado funeral home owner was sentenced to 18 years in prison for defrauding grieving families and mismanaging nearly 200 decomposing bodies. Carie Hallford, 49, operated Return to Nature Funeral Home in Penrose with her husband Jon, collecting over $130,000 for services they never provided, including cremation and burial.

Federal prosecutors revealed the couple also defrauded the Small Business Administration of more than $800,000 through fraudulent pandemic relief loans. The Hallfords were arrested in November 2023 after investigators discovered the decomposing remains at their facility, following reports of a foul odor. The scene was described as 'horrific' by local authorities.

Hallford pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and apologized in court, citing years of domestic abuse. Judge Nina Y. Wang ordered $1.07 million in restitution and three years of supervised release. Her husband Jon received a 20-year federal sentence and 40 years on state charges. Hallford faces sentencing on state charges April 24.
