His 2009 album ‘Yonkers NY’, a Grammy-nominated tribute to his hometown, showcased his country-tinged roots. He also wrote ‘Welcome Home’ for Walter Jackson and ‘Welcome Home’ for Dusty Springfield, while his Songwriters Hall of Fame induction in 2016—shared with Marvin Gaye and Tom Petty—celebrated his enduring influence.

His final album, ‘Words From Holy Gardens’, was released months before his death.
