A child participating in an Easter egg hunt at DeForest Park in Long Beach, California, made a gruesome discovery on Sunday when they unearthed a human skull buried along a dirt path. The Long Beach Police Department responded to reports of possible human remains just before 5 p.m., according to department spokeswoman Andrea Moran.

Several families were celebrating Easter at the park when the child's family organized the egg hunt activity. The skull, which included the lower jawbone, was confirmed as human by the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner. Investigators have identified the remains only as "Unidentified Doe No. 196" while working to determine the person's age, gender, and cause of death.

The skull and mandible were transported to a forensic laboratory for examination. Authorities have not released additional information about the case as the investigation continues. The discovery has raised questions about how long the remains had been buried at the park and whether they are connected to any missing persons cases in the area.
