Updated on: August 6, 2026 / 9:41 PM EDT/ CBS News Add CBS News on Google Marsha Blackburn won the Republican primary for Tennessee governor on Thursday, The Associated Press projects, defeating John Rose. With about two‑thirds of ballots counted, Blackburn led Rose 43.8% to 32.6%.

Given Tennessee’s heavy Republican lean, Blackburn is considered the favorite in November against Democratic nominee Jerri Green, as Democrats have not won a statewide race in the state since 2006. Incumbent Bill Lee is barred from seeking reelection due to term limits.

Rose, the first candidate to enter the primary last year, followed by Blackburn and state Rep. Monty Fritts. Blackburn enjoyed early momentum, though a late poll showed a tighter race. Rose invested $13 million of his own money, while Blackburn raised $10.8 million.

Both candidates framed themselves as the most conservative, and though President Trump did not endorse, Blackburn highlighted him in her announcement video. Rose and Fritts argued she was insufficiently aligned with Trump, noting her vote to certify the 2020 election results.
