Asha Bhosle, the legendary Indian playback singer whose voice defined generations of Bollywood cinema, died Sunday in Mumbai at age 92. Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed the death, citing multiple organ failure following cardiac arrest. She had been admitted to hospital the previous day with exhaustion and a chest infection.

Over eight decades, Bhosle recorded thousands of songs across genres and languages, earning a Guinness World Record for most studio recordings by any artist. While her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar embodied sweet heroines, Bhosle became the voice of cabaret dancers and heartbroken courtesans, creating a bold, flirtatious vocal persona that broke from traditional playback singing conventions.

Bhosle's career spanned from struggling as a young artist overshadowed by her sister to becoming a cultural icon. Her collaborations with composers O.P. Nayyar and later her husband R.D. Burman produced some of Indian cinema's most iconic songs. Even in her 60s and beyond, she remained relevant, working with younger artists like A.R. Rahman and international musicians including Boy George and Gorillaz. Her legacy extends beyond music to acting, with a film debut at 79, and business ventures including restaurant chains.
