Animal Activists Storm Beagle Research Center

Police and private security used tear gas and rubber bullets to repel approximately 1,000 animal rights activists attempting to storm Ridglan Farms in Wisconsin. The protesters, organized by Direct Action Everywhere, sought to beagles bred for medical experiments. Activists arrived in black clothing or white lab jumpsuits, despite law enforcement warnings that trespassers would be arrested. Officers arrested the group's founder, Wayne Hsiung, before the confrontation escalated.

The raid marks activists' second attempt at Ridglan Farms this year. In March, activists successfully broke into the facility and rescued 22 beagles that were subsequently adopted. Last fall, a special prosecutor found Ridglan had performed animal mistreatment experiments, forcing the company to surrender its breeding license by July 1. Despite this, Ridglan can continue experiments on-site.

Dane County Sheriff's Office reported at least 26 arrests during the failed raid. Protesters claimed officers deployed force without proper warnings, with one activist describing being pepper-sprayed while filming. Ridglan Farms, a state-licensed dog breeder, maintains it does not abuse animals despite former employees testifying about eye surgeries performed without general anesthesia.
