An Alaska Airlines flight and a FedEx cargo plane came within 300 feet of each other during simultaneous landings at Newark Liberty International Airport on Tuesday evening. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating what officials described as a "close call" between the Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 and the FedEx Boeing 777.

The Alaska Airlines pilot aborted the landing at approximately 8:15 p.m. after air traffic control cleared the FedEx flight for final approach on an intersecting runway. The Alaska Airlines flight was arriving from Portland while the FedEx plane was coming from Memphis. The Federal Aviation Administration and NTSB are both investigating the incident.

This near-miss follows another close call at Newark two weeks ago when a Singapore Airlines plane's wing clipped a Spirit Airlines plane while pushing back from the gate. The airport has faced ongoing challenges with air traffic controller staffing and equipment. Alaska Airlines emphasized that its pilots are "highly trained" to perform go-around maneuvers, which the FAA describes as safe routine procedures. FedEx confirmed its flight crew landed safely after receiving instructions from air traffic control.
