North American venture funding reached unprecedented heights in Q1 2026, with U.S. and Canadian companies securing $252.6 billion across all stages. This massive total represents more than triple the previous quarter's funding and shattered the prior record of $95.7 billion set in Q3 2021. The surge was overwhelmingly driven by artificial intelligence investments.

AI companies captured over 87% of total investment, with $221 billion flowing to Crunchbase AI-related categories. This marks roughly 6x the prior quarter's AI investment total. The funding landscape was dominated by mega-rounds for high-profile players including OpenAI's $110 billion February financing led by Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank, followed by $30 billion for Anthropic and $20 billion for xAI.

Late-stage and technology growth rounds comprised 88% of all North American startup investment at $222.4 billion, more than five times the prior quarter's tally. While early-stage funding increased 17% to $25.1 billion and seed-stage investment remained robust at $5.1 billion, these segments didn't set records. The quarter's exit activity was comparatively modest, with notable IPOs including EquipmentShare and York Space Systems, alongside major acquisitions like Capital One's $5.15 billion purchase of Brex.
