Tech Workers Compete in AI Tokenmaxxing Race

At tech companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, employees are competing on leaderboards to show how many AI tokens they consume, with some racking up bills exceeding $150,000 per month. This phenomenon, dubbed "tokenmaxxing," has become a new status game among coders desperate to prove their productivity in the AI era.

Engineers are now spending thousands of dollars monthly on AI tokens, treating them like job perks alongside dental insurance. At Shopify, managers factor AI use into performance reviews, rewarding heavy users while chastising those who don't embrace the tools. Some workers consume billions of tokens weekly using agentic coding systems that can run unsupervised for hours.

AI companies have encouraged this behavior by giving power users trophies and rewards, equating heavy AI use with increased productivity. However, some tech workers worry colleagues are burning through thousands of dollars daily worth of tokens for bragging rights rather than actual productivity gains. The practice has become so prevalent that venture capitalists now discuss "token anxiety" at dinner parties, replacing conversations about what people are building with questions about how many agents they're running.
