Starmer Meets Meta, Google on UK Child Safety Rules

Prime Minister Keir Starmer will meet executives from Meta, Google, TikTok, Snap, and X at No. 10 Downing Street on Thursday to discuss protecting children online. The meeting comes as his government considers introducing new regulations within months, not years, according to his office.

The British government is conducting a three-month review of existing laws, including a public consultation that ends May 26. Over 124,000 parents have signed a pledge to delay giving children smartphones until after eighth grade. Some Labour Party members want Britain to follow Australia's lead in banning social media for children under 16.

Starmer's push has drawn criticism from President Trump and American conservatives who claim the UK is restricting free speech and unfairly targeting U.S.-based tech companies. The Online Safety Act already requires age verification for porn sites, and Apple recently implemented new age verification requirements for app downloads in Britain. Starmer has said he will take whatever steps necessary to keep children safe online, signaling potential new restrictions on autoplay videos and VPN services.
