Despite the panning, box office expectations are stratospheric: analysts predict at least $70 million in its opening weekend.

The road to theaters was fraught. Major studios passed on the $150 million project, deeming Jackson too "radioactive" following the 2019 "Leaving Neverland" documentary. Lionsgate stepped in, with Graham King—the producer behind "Bohemian Rhapsody"—securing the deal. Production hit a major snag: after filming, lawyers discovered the estate was barred from mentioning Jordan Chandler, forcing $40 million to $50 million in reshoots to remove the third act entirely.

The financial stakes are enormous. Lionsgate needs just $150 million domestically to turn a profit, and analysts project $100 million in Japan alone. Universal paid $75 million for international rights. Given that "Bohemian Rhapsody" earned $911 million worldwide despite negative reviews, the studio is betting controversy won't hurt ticket sales—and early data suggests fan backlash may actually be driving demand.
