February Job Losses Signal Economic Trouble

Employers slashed 92,000 jobs in February, the Labor Department reported, sending shockwaves through the U.S. economy. The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.4 percent, with losses cutting across nearly all major sectors. Health care and social assistance, once a reliable job engine, lost 19,000 positions due to a nurses' strike in California and Hawaii.

Economists had expected hiring to rebound after January's surprisingly robust gains, but the latest figures dashed those hopes. Manufacturing shed 12,000 jobs, while leisure and hospitality lost 27,000 positions. Construction also cut 11,000 jobs, painting a picture of broad-based weakness that extends beyond any single industry.

The report comes amid economic uncertainty from Middle East unrest and trade policy questions. While wage growth remained solid at 3.8 percent annually, the three-month hiring trend effectively slowed to zero. Despite the grim headline, some sectors like construction are still expanding - Performance Contractors in Louisiana has added 2,000 workers recently and expects to hire 3,000 more this year.
