S&P 500 Underperforms During Trump's Second Term

Donald Trump’s second administration has struggled to maintain market momentum, with the S&P 500 underperforming compared to the first 446 days of the four previous presidencies. Despite a strong economic start in January 2025, erratic policy shifts triggered early volatility. Investors faced immediate pressure following the administration's April tariff announcements, which disrupted previous market stability.

Market volatility spiked again this year as the president issued threats regarding Greenland annexation and new European tariffs. Such unpredictability, combined with investigations into Federal Reserve chair Jay Powell, created a climate of uncertainty. While the index managed an 18 per cent gain by the end of 2025, recent geopolitical tensions and policy proclamations have dampened that earlier recovery.

Structural changes in the index exacerbate these pressures because growth-oriented tech giants like Nvidia and Alphabet now dominate. Unlike the industrial-heavy composition of 2009, today's market relies on companies sensitive to interest rates and inflation. Trump’s unpredictable approach to trade and foreign policy creates the exact instability that these high-valuation growth stocks cannot easily absorb.
