YMTC, the Wuhan-based Chinese chipmaker, aims to become the world's largest Nand flash memory producer by the end of 2027. The company filed for an IPO last week to raise Rmb33bn ($5bn) to upgrade facilities and fund research and development. In the first quarter, YMTC reported operating revenue of Rmb47bn ($7bn) and net profit of Rmb33bn, more than double its total for all of 2025.

The IPO is expected to value the company above Rmb1tn ($150bn), making it the second-largest Chinese IPO this year. YMTC's aggressive expansion follows the successful debut of CXMT, another Chinese memory-chip maker whose valuation surged over 400 percent after raising $9bn. According to Trend Force, YMTC ranked third globally and first in China among Nand producers in the first quarter, behind Samsung and SK Hynix.

The global Nand market was estimated at $71bn last year and is projected to exceed $300bn in 2026. Analysts warn that CXMT and YMTC's capacity expansion could slide memory chip prices, ending a sector bull run, though demand for AI-driven training may offset this risk. YMTC and CXMT are leveraging state subsidies and a leading electronics supply chain to establish China as an indispensable player in global technology, regardless of western trade barriers.
