Vienna model for UK housing policy

Labour's ambitious plan to build 1.5 million new homes across seven development sites needs inspiration from Vienna's successful Alterlaa social housing scheme. UK housing developments face criticism for poor design, high carbon footprints, and local opposition, yet Alterlaa maintains a five-year waiting list despite being nearly 40 years old.

Alterlaa accommodates 10,000 residents across 60 acres of parkland with extensive amenities including schools, shops, and 20 swimming pools. Designed by architect Harry Glück, the development follows a not-for-profit model where residents lease rather than own their homes, paying just £10 per square meter monthly - a fifth of London prices.

The Austrian model's success lies in communal facilities and stable funding through a publicly backed association. With proper maintenance and resident-shareholder involvement, Labour's new towns could avoid the opposition plaguing current UK housing developments which prioritize profit over community integration.
