Keir Starmer is set to unveil a major defence investment strategy, headlined by a £5bn allocation for drones and uncrewed systems. This move aims to modernize the military following lessons from conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. The plan follows intense negotiations between the Treasury and the Ministry of Defence, which ultimately led to the resignation of John Healey.

Total spending is expected to rise by roughly £14.5bn, a figure signed off by Andy Burnham. While this represents a significant shift toward autonomous technology, military leaders warn the amount may still fall short of their requirements. Many senior officers suggest that even this increased budget will necessitate difficult cuts to existing departmental programs to remain viable.

Beyond hardware, the government intends to use this spending to bolster sovereign British manufacturing and domestic AI capabilities. Andy Burnham emphasized that procurement must prioritize local suppliers to ensure long-term industrial strength. This strategic pivot seeks to integrate uncrewed platforms with traditional assets like Army Apaches and Royal Navy task groups.
