Trump Administration Drops Legal Fight Against Big Law Firms

The Trump administration is expected to abandon its legal battle against punitive executive orders targeting major law firms, according to sources familiar with the matter. The White House plans to terminate appeals in four cases involving Jenner & Block, Perkins Coie, Wilmer Hale, and Susman Godfrey, potentially as early as Monday.

The executive orders would have suspended lawyers' security clearances and scrutinized government contracts, but the firms successfully sued to block implementation. This retreat marks a significant shift after Trump issued the orders last year as part of a broader crackdown on perceived opponents in Big Law, including firms that employed lawyers who worked on investigations during his first term.

Several firms previously cut deals with the administration, agreeing to provide pro bono work supporting Trump's preferred causes. The government has yet to file formal court documents and could still reverse course, with a brief due this week. The Department of Justice declined to comment on the potential withdrawal.
