Top UK Law Firms Outperform Smaller Rivals in Profit Growth

The gap between the UK's largest law firms and their smaller rivals has widened significantly. According to PwC's annual survey, the top 10 firms achieved average net profit growth of 13 per cent last year, compared to just 3.2 per cent for the next tier. These leading firms captured more than half of the revenue pool among the top 100.

Mid-tier firms (ranked 26–50) faced similar costs and international footprints but managed only a 24 per cent net profit margin, versus 41 per cent for the top 10, which includes elite "magic circle" firms like Linklaters, Freshfields, and Clifford Chance. Lucy Robson of PwC attributes this to the top firms' ability to command premium rates in highly profitable practice areas. Meanwhile, smaller firms (51–100) have shown agility and strong recent performance.

The sector faces intense pressure from US-founded rivals, with top partners earning up to $20mn. While AI adoption has risen to two-thirds of firms, only 8 per cent report financial benefits. Average hourly rates increased across the board, led by a 6.6 per cent rise at firms ranked 26–50, while chargeable hours declined.
