Freezers at dozens of supermarkets in Sweden and Belgium suddenly overheated in a suspected cyber attack, ruining food worth millions of euros just weeks after French retailers were targeted. In Sweden, Ica and Coop shops reported temperatures reaching 55C, while Ahold Delhaize stores in Belgium were affected. About 40 Delhaize shops and 15 Carrefour and five Spar stores in Belgium were impacted.
In Sweden, Coop said hackers tampered with fridges at seven of its roughly 800 stores. Camilla Nilsson, store manager of Ica St Olof, stated hackers "managed to get into our refrigeration management systems and change the settings." At least four Ica shops were hit. In France, last month's attacks saw fridge temperatures rise to 80C, with many affected systems running Danfoss software.
Danfoss, the Danish industrial group, said affected systems were running outdated firmware. Robert Lee of Dragos noted large language models have made OT attacks easier to execute at scale. Ahold Delhaize said it was working to assess the situation.
The incidents highlight growing vulnerabilities in retail refrigeration systems.
