State Dept IG Probes Gaza Humanitarian Foundation's $30Mn Spending

The State Department's Office of Inspector General is investigating the now-defunct Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and how it spent millions in emergency aid, according to people familiar with the inquiry. The probe focuses on a $30 million grant announced last June for GHF, a private organization set up to distribute aid in Gaza with support from the Trump administration and Israeli government.

The US was the only country to publicly acknowledge funding GHF. UN officials described it as a "fig leaf" for Israeli war aims, while humanitarian groups refused to cooperate. The organization drew immediate controversy due to its opaque origins and funding—its founding executive director and deputy both quit before operations began. Health officials in Hamas-controlled Gaza said about 1,000 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire while trying to reach GHF centres.

The inspector general is examining what money was spent and how, including which funding bucket it came from and how it was distributed. Investigators are also looking into the pricing of aid and services that GHF purchased with state department funds. Two people familiar with GHF's operations said the organization paid significantly more for food than the US had previously paid in the region. GHF maintained it had distributed more than 187 million free meals during its months-long existence before suspending operations in October 2025.
