Peru's Fujimori vs Sánchez: Copper nation faces political reckoning

Keiko Fujimori, daughter of jailed former dictator Alberto Fujimori, and leftist Roberto Sánchez will face off in Peru's June presidential run-off after first-round results showed Fujimori with 17 percent and Sánchez with 12 percent. The race features 34 candidates and weeks of counting amid irregularity claims, with the winner taking over a country that has cycled through 10 presidents in a decade while the copper-exporting economy has outperformed regional peers.

Fujimori pledged to protect Peru's vital mining sector and maintain a tough line on crime. Sánchez, meanwhile, campaigned for greater state involvement in the economy and a rewrite of the business-friendly constitution. He also pledged to pardon Pedro Castillo, the leftist former president jailed after his 2022 impeachment. A prosecutor accused Sánchez of financial crimes this week, a claim his lawyer rejected.

Fujimori's Popular Force party won the most legislative seats but fell short of a majority, leaving the next president to contend with a divided Congress. The country's elections chief resigned last month amid an outcry over slow vote counts and allegations of fraud.
