Ocado partners with Asda to boost online grocery

Ocado Group has signed a e‑commerce partnership with supermarket chain Asda, giving the retailer access to Ocado’s automated fulfilment network for online grocery orders. The deal follows Ocado’s recent setback in the United States, where its partnership with a retailer failed to meet growth expectations. By leveraging Ocado’s technology, Asda aims to boost its digital sales share. The rollout begins in Q3 2024.

Analysts see the move as a way for Asda to close the gap with rivals Tesco and Sainsbury’s, which have long‑standing click‑and‑collect and delivery infrastructures. Ocado will operate its proprietary warehouse software and robotics, while Asda will retain branding and customer service. The collaboration could lift Asda’s online order volume by double‑digit percentages within the first year.

The partnership expands Ocado’s UK footprint after the US venture forced a strategic retreat, reinforcing its business model of licensing technology to grocery operators. Investors will watch whether the revenue share arrangement improves Ocado’s margins, which have been pressured by high capital costs. For now, the deal adds a steady stream of order volume to both parties and improve cash flow.
