Monzo chair Gary Hoffman to step down

Monzo chair Gary Hoffman is leaving the fintech next month, to be replaced on an interim basis by non‑executive director Karen Peacock, after a shareholder revolt that began when the board ousted chief executive TS Anil in October 2025. The revolt followed the board’s decision to remove Anil, which sparked anger among large shareholders who felt blindsided.

Hoffman, who has chaired Monzo since 2019 and previously led the English Premier League, said it “feels like the natural time to depart as Monzo pursues its next phase of growth”. He also noted he had completed “several years of difficult prostate cancer treatment” and wanted to focus on family.

The background includes the December 2025 investor revolt after Anil’s removal, the board’s plan to move Anil into an advisory role, and the subsequent appointment of former Google executive Diana Layfield as chief executive in February 2026. Monzo, valued at about $6bn in its latest secondary share sale, reported pre‑tax profits of £87mn in the year to March 2026.

Layfield has pledged to expand into more European markets after shutting its US operations, while Peacock will take over pending regulatory approval as the company searches for a permanent chair.
