The Middle East war has triggered widespread holiday cancellations beyond conflict zones, with Cyprus and Turkey bearing the brunt. Accommodation prices in Cyprus dropped more than 12% for April and May stays, while Bodrum, Turkey saw prices sink over 25%. Luxury hotel group Muskita reported cancellations for March and April bookings and slower reservations for the remainder of 2026, highlighting the immediate market impact.

Tour operators are experiencing significant financial repercussions. On The Beach shares fell 12% after reporting a "significant slowdown" in bookings for Turkey, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt. Meanwhile, travelers flocked to perceived safer destinations, pushing prices up in Italy, Malta and Croatia. EasyJet saw demand shift to Spain's Balearic Islands and Canary Islands, while Egypt offered airlines $4,000 bonuses for maintaining routes despite reduced bookings.

The tourism disruption threatens to cast a shadow over the crucial summer period for eastern Mediterranean destinations. Cyprus president Nikos Christodoulides announced measures to support hotel industry wages in April, and Thanos Hotels reported a slight booking uptick at week's end. Industry executives warn that if the conflict continues beyond several weeks, summer tourism could face severe, prolonged damage to regional economies.
