Microsoft has restructured its AI leadership team, shifting responsibilities away from Mustafa Suleyman and promoting Jacob Andreou to lead its Copilot division. The Redmond, Washington-based tech giant aims to simplify its AI offerings and accelerate development of in-house models to reduce reliance on OpenAI.

Andreou, a former Snap executive, now oversees both the consumer chatbot app and Microsoft 365 Copilot service, reporting directly to CEO Satya Nadella. Suleyman retains oversight of frontier large language model development as Microsoft races to catch up with rivals like Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI.

Microsoft disclosed 15 million 365 Copilot subscriptions but faces stiff competition from ChatGPT's 900 million weekly active users and Google's Gemini with 750 million monthly users. The restructuring attempts to consolidate Microsoft's confusing array of Copilot brands into a unified system.
