Lutz Schüler steers Virgin Media O2 through health scare and telecom shake‑up

Virgin Media O2 chief Lutz Schüler returned to the helm after a September 2024 prostate‑cancer diagnosis that required urgent treatment. The 58‑year‑old, who has led the merged telecom since 2019, survived the most aggressive form of the disease and was back in the office within a month. His personal battle coincided with a divorce and the integration of a £31bn merger between O2 and Virgin Media.

VMO2 now wrestles with fierce price pressure from low‑cost “altnet” rivals. Last year it shed 145,100 broadband customers and slipped to third‑largest mobile operator after the £16.5bn Vodafone‑Three tie‑up. To counter the squeeze, shareholders Liberty Global, Telefónica and InfraVia sealed a £2bn deal merging Netomnia with Nexfibre, expanding fibre reach to roughly 20 million premises.

Schüler leans on his dual background at Liberty’s Unitymedia and Telefónica to broker consensus between owners who differ on asset strategy. He stresses transparent job cuts, coffee‑room chats and hands‑on site visits to rebuild a brand plagued by service complaints and a controversial £2.50 monthly mobile price rise that cost 165,000 customers. The fibre expansion and new satellite service now anchor his turnaround plan.
