Griffin vs Mamdani: NYC Tax Battle Escalates

Citadel has launched a blistering attack on New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani after he used billionaire Ken Griffin's $238 million penthouse to promote a tax on luxurious second homes. The hedge fund firm sent a memo accusing Mamdani of "ignorance and disdain" toward those building New York City.

The mayor's proposed tax would target properties valued above $5 million, affecting about 13,000 properties in the city. Citadel's COO countered that the firm's principals and employees have paid nearly $2.3 billion in city and state taxes over five years, while Griffin personally contributed $650 million to philanthropic causes.

The escalating tensions reflect a broader clash between progressive politics and Wall Street. Mamdani has sought to reassure business leaders he's not anti-business, while Citadel proceeds with its $6 billion Park Avenue redevelopment project that would create 6,000 construction jobs.
