Florida Sues OpenAI Over Child Harm Claims

Florida filed a landmark civil suit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, alleging that the company’s chatbots have inflicted a “litany of harms” on Americans, especially children. The 83‑page complaint claims the lab released products it knows are addictive and unsafe, citing cases where users faced violent content and data misuse.

Attorney‑general James Uthmeier demanded that OpenAI stop collecting data from kids under 13 without parental consent and seeks a court order blocking the company’s “human‑compassion” façade. He warned that mass shooters could be aided by the technology and urged other states to follow suit. The filing also cites previous incidents linking the bot to violent planning.

The suit arrives as Republican lawmakers push tighter AI rules, while Florida’s governor Ron DeSantis criticized the federal approach and champions a state‑level bill to enforce consumer and child protection measures. The lawsuit could spur similar actions nationwide and pressure OpenAI to tighten safeguards.

If successful, the case could set a precedent for state‑level accountability of AI firms and force OpenAI to overhaul data practices, reshaping the industry’s regulatory landscape and investor confidence. Investors will likely reassess exposure to AI startups, and companies may accelerate compliance programs to avoid costly litigation.
