EU Fines E-commerce Platforms Over Unsafe Imports

The European Union has approved new customs rules allowing member states to fine e-commerce platforms that repeatedly import unsafe products from China. Under the agreement, platforms caught bringing in items like toxic slime and dangerous toys that violate EU standards multiple times monthly will lose their “Trust and Check” status and face fines of up to 4 per cent of their previous year’s imports.

Repeat offenders could see penalties rise to 6 per cent if they breach regulations within six months, and EU countries could ultimately block access to their websites. The reform also eliminates the €150 customs duty exemption for low-value goods and introduces a €3 levy plus handling fees on such imports. Starting in 2028, importers must upload data to a new EU customs authority hub in Lille to ensure consistent enforcement across the bloc.

The overhaul targets the surge in low-value parcels from Chinese marketplaces like Temu and Shein, which have overwhelmed EU customs systems. Consumer advocates have long warned about the flood of potentially dangerous products entering the EU unchecked, and this reform represents a significant step toward addressing those concerns.
