Driving short distances in petrol-powered cars is highly polluting, but the Elf offers an eco-friendly alternative. Inventor Rob Cotter designed this enclosed, three-wheeled recumbent bicycle with a battery and solar-panelled roof. It seats a friend and carries shopping, while its cute design evokes old Citroëns and the BMW Isetta. Cotter, who worked in California's motor industry and joined the International Human Powered Vehicle Association, helped organize the first US solar-car race in 1988.

The pedal- and solar-powered Elf 3.0 has sold over 800 units, collectively travelling millions of miles across 15 countries. Version 3.0, available for pre-order, adds front and rear suspension and a drivetrain configurable as an ebike, mobility vehicle, or road-legal EV with a top speed of 30mph. Cotter says every ride feels like a vacation, free from the petroleum economy.
