Pablo Hernández de Cos, former governor of the Bank of Spain, has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Christine Lagarde as European Central Bank president, according to a survey of monetary policy experts. The OMFIF poll of 20 experts ranked Hernández de Cos highest across nine key criteria, including central bank experience and crisis management ability.

Currently serving as general manager of the Bank for International Settlements, Hernández de Cos received an average score of 1.77 out of 5, narrowly edging out Bundesbank president Joachim Nagel at 1.90. The survey evaluated five top contenders for the position, with outgoing French governor François Villeroy de Galhau and former Dutch central bank chief Klaas Knot also scoring highly.

While Lagarde's term runs until October 2027, early departure speculation has intensified. The ECB presidency selection process remains politically charged, with Spain and Germany having never held the top position in the central bank's 27-year history. Nagel's prospects may be complicated by Germany already holding the European Commission presidency. Financial markets experts note that the next ECB president will face significant challenges managing potential government bond market disruptions and navigating complex monetary policy decisions in an uncertain economic environment.
