CMA Targets Aldi and Lidl Store Expansion Rules

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) plans to prevent Aldi and Lidl from using property covenants that block rival supermarket openings, applying the Controlled Land Order to the discounters. This move aims to level the playing field for major retailers like Tesco and Sainsbury's. The order, introduced in 2010, targets land banking practices by large grocers.

Aldi and Lidl now account for 21 per cent of the UK grocery market. The CMA's proposal follows calls from Sainsbury's, Morrisons, and Iceland to subject the discounters to the same rules. CMA executive director Juliette Enser emphasized the need for consumer choice and fair competition.

Aldi and Lidl rejected claims their expansion harms rivals, asserting their growth plans remain unaffected. The discounters maintain their focus on value and quality while embracing market competition.
