Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has initiated discussions about entering Formula 1, following a meeting between executive vice-president Stella Li and former Red Bull chief Christian Horner in Cannes. The talks represent BYD's latest move to elevate its international brand profile beyond its dominant position in China's EV market.

BYD's potential F1 venture aligns with its aggressive European expansion strategy, including new manufacturing facilities and dealer networks. The automaker already partners with Manchester City and Inter Milan, leveraging football's global reach to promote its affordable electric vehicles and advanced software capabilities.

Entering F1 would mark a significant milestone for Chinese automakers, especially given the sport's renewed focus on China after the Grand Prix's 2024 return following a pandemic hiatus. A 12th team entry would require several hundred million dollars in compensation fees to existing grid teams, similar to what Cadillac paid this season.

BYD's exploratory talks highlight how traditional automakers are pursuing motorsport as a technology showcase. Success could accelerate BYD's global ambitions while providing F1 with deeper access to China's 150 million-plus motorsport fans.
