BYD Challenges Luxury EV Market With 5-Minute Charging

BYD will challenge Porsche and BMW in Europe's luxury EV market with the Z9GT model, which boasts revolutionary 5-minute charging technology. The Denza brand vehicle reaches 70% capacity in five minutes and nearly full charge in 12 minutes, even in temperatures as low as minus 30C. With an 800km range, this premium offering marks BYD's shift from mass market to high-end vehicles as it begins global rollout of its flash charging system.

BYD, which surpassed Tesla as the world's largest EV maker last year, has aggressively expanded in Europe despite a 41% sales drop in China this February. The Chinese carmaker's UK and Europe sales more than tripled to nearly 190,000 vehicles last year, capturing 1.7% of the EU market. BYD took full control of its Denza joint venture with Mercedes-Benz in 2024 after establishing it in 2010.

The company plans to install hundreds of flash stations across Europe this year, complementing its existing 4,200 sites in China. This strategy echoes Tesla's Supercharger network, which delivers up to 200 miles of range in 15 minutes. While EV adoption in Europe reached 17.4% of total sales in 2025, infrastructure remains uneven across the continent, with eastern Europe still struggling to address range anxiety for drivers.
