BYD Capitalizes on Oil Crisis as AI Token Race Heats Up

Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD is positioning itself as a rare beneficiary of the Middle East conflict, with skyrocketing fuel prices expected to boost overseas sales significantly. Chairman Wang Chuanfu told analysts that the company has been selling two weeks' worth of vehicles in a single day in markets like Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines.

The oil crisis has triggered widespread supply chain disruptions across Asia's tech sector, with component shortages extending beyond well-known chips to specialized parts like external modulation lasers and continuous-wave lasers. Industry sources warn these constraints may persist even after any ceasefire, as PC maker Asus's general manager noted that "no one can escape" the challenges.

Meanwhile, Chinese AI companies are gaining ground in the global race for tokens, the units of text and data processed by large language models. Chinese models from DeepSeek and MiniMax have overtaken US rivals in token consumption since February, leveraging cost advantages of $2-$3 per million output tokens compared to $15 for competitors like Anthropic's Claude. This efficiency gap is becoming increasingly significant as AI agents consume vastly more tokens than earlier chatbots.
