Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin secured $468mn in NASA lunar infrastructure funding to build two uncrewed landers, the largest award in the space agency's first commercial Moon Base contracts. The initiative targets a $20bn base near the lunar south pole, with Astrolab and Lunar Outpost each winning $220mn for rover development.

Firefly Aerospace received $75mn for survey drones, while Blue Origin overcame a New Glenn rocket grounding in April. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized commercial partnerships will tackle lunar challenges independently, echoing Apollo-era problem-solving. SpaceX remains poised for astronaut missions despite its $1.75tn IPO prospects.

The Moon Base will span hundreds of square miles with distinct zones for science, ice extraction, and nuclear power. This contract structure reflects NASA's shift toward commercial partnerships for sustained lunar presence, moving beyond traditional government-led programs.
