Ares in talks to buy rival Leonard Green

Ares Management, which oversees more than $600bn in client assets, is reportedly in discussions to acquire Leonard Green Partners, a firm managing $85bn. The potential deal, valued in the billions, would see Ares, primarily focused on private credit, integrate Leonard Green's private equity operations. Both companies share roots in Michael Milken's former firm, Drexel Burnham Lambert.

While combining private equity and credit is common among larger firms like Blackstone and KKR, this acquisition would represent a significant expansion for Ares into buyout operations. Leonard Green has a history of investing in well-known companies, though with mixed results. Such mergers often present challenges in aligning corporate cultures and executive compensation.

Despite the geographical proximity of the two Los Angeles-based firms, the integration of their distinct business models and personalities is expected to be a complex process, even if it offers Leonard Green a path for succession or to navigate softening returns.
