Allianz Seeks £280k From Activists

Allianz has filed a lawsuit against six pro-Palestine activists seeking £280,000 in damages after protests targeted their offices in London and Guildford. The insurance giant claims the civil courts represent the appropriate forum for compensation following incidents where protesters occupied rooftops and defaced buildings with red paint, causing substantial business disruption.

The defendants, appearing without legal representation, requested the civil case be delayed while parallel criminal proceedings continue. Three face trial in October for actions at the London site, with the others awaiting trial for Guildford incidents. Activists argue the civil case undermines their right to a fair trial due to the £280,000 claim and lack of legal resources.

Allianz rejected claims of being aggressive or oppressive, noting civil courts can handle cases without legal representation. The company deducted any potential criminal compensation from its civil claims. A judgment on the defendants' request to pause the civil case will be issued later, with trials scheduled for October and next year.

The case raises questions about corporate legal strategies against protest activities. Allianz argued the incidents caused "anxiety, distress and intimidation" among employees and required "extensive remedial works." The legal battle highlights tensions between corporate property rights and protest activities in the current geopolitical climate.
