AI Models Pose Systemic Threat to Finance

The IMF has warned that new AI models like Anthropic's Claude Mythos pose a systemic risk to the financial system by creating correlated failures in cyber defenses. These advanced AI capabilities can dramatically reduce the time needed to identify and exploit vulnerabilities, potentially disrupting financial intermediation, payments and confidence across the global banking system.

Recent testing shows Mythos has already discovered thousands of high-severity vulnerabilities in every major operating system and web browser. The model is being released gradually to only 40 organizations, including Amazon, Microsoft and JPMorgan Chase, leaving many non-US banks without access and creating uneven protection levels across the financial sector.

Cyber risks don't respect borders, and emerging markets with weaker defenses face disproportionate exposure. As financial institutions increasingly rely on shared software and service providers, these AI models could create simultaneous vulnerabilities across many institutions, requiring cyber stress testing and improved public-private collaboration on threat intelligence.
